PLC – Grey House Precinct

Pymble, Sydney

The Grey House Precinct at Pymble Ladies’ College reimagines contemporary learning environments through a series of light-filled, interconnected spaces. Designed by BVN and delivered by Stephen Edwards Constructions, the project centres around a multi-level atrium that brings daylight, visibility and movement into the heart of the building.

Tensile was engaged to design, supply and install a series of vertical stainless steel cable barriers across the central atrium and adjoining external balconies. The system provides compliant fall protection while maintaining the openness and visual clarity that define the architectural intent.

The installation utilised 5mm stainless steel cables set at 80mm centres, running continuously across multiple levels. This approach creates a clean, uninterrupted vertical rhythm that aligns with the building’s structural expression while minimising visual bulk. The result is a barrier system that reads as part of the architecture rather than an applied safety element.

Within the atrium, permeability was critical. The cable barriers allow light to move freely through the space, preserve sightlines between levels, and support passive supervision — all essential qualities in a contemporary educational environment. At the same time, the system delivers the performance required for elevated edges and high-traffic student areas.

Close coordination with BVN and Stephen Edwards Constructions ensured that each connection point was carefully resolved within the surrounding structure. The continuity of the cables across levels required precise detailing and installation to maintain consistent tension, alignment and finish throughout the space.

The completed installation reinforces the clarity and lightness of the Grey House Precinct, demonstrating how carefully detailed tensile systems can provide safety while enhancing the architectural experience.

Vertical cable barrier systems are increasingly used in atriums and educational buildings where transparency, durability and clean detailing are essential. Stainless steel cables provide compliant fall protection while maintaining open sightlines, natural light and a strong connection between spaces.
