Luke Bowen Pedestrian Bridge

Coffs Harbour

The Luke Bowen Pedestrian Bridge in Coffs Harbour creates an important new pedestrian connection across a major transport corridor. Delivered for Coffs Harbour City Council, the bridge was constructed by Ferrovial Gamuda JV with engineering by Arcadis and Sener Australia. The structure was designed to remain light and open while maintaining clear views of the surrounding landscape.

Tensile designed, supplied and installed Jakob Webnet mesh as the bridge’s safety barrier system. Webnet provides robust fall protection while remaining highly permeable and visually transparent. This allows pedestrians to enjoy uninterrupted views while the bridge meets the safety requirements expected of public infrastructure.

The installation used 2.0mm wire with a 40mm aperture, selected for its strength, durability and visual lightness. The Webnet barrier system complies with AS5100 bridge design standards, ensuring the installation meets the performance requirements.

Close coordination with Ferrovial Gamuda JV and the construction team allowed the barrier system to be integrated early in the build process. Approximately 90% of the mesh was installed while the bridge sections remained at ground level, before lifting the structure into place.

This approach reduced installation time at height, improved site safety and created efficiencies within the overall construction program. Early integration also ensured the Webnet formed part of the bridge structure rather than appearing as an element added later.

The completed installation delivers a durable safety barrier that preserves views, maximises permeability and complements the bridge’s clean structural form.

Stainless steel mesh barriers are increasingly used on pedestrian bridges and infrastructure projects where transparency and durability are essential. Webnet mesh allows engineers and architects to meet safety standards such as AS5100 while maintaining open views, airflow and a lightweight structural expression.
