Catenary lighting, St. Gallen Switzerland

Catenary lighting has the power to provide an instant uplift in the public domain. Light can be more than a functional need and when used in a fashion such as shown here can transform streets, plazas and public spaces. Stainless steel tension cables provide a lightweight architectural solution, minimising the structure required for suspension and allowing the light to be positioned exactly where it needs to be, irrespective of the ground condition.

The catenary lighting display for the City of St. Gallen in Switzerland for Christmas 2011 consisted of over 700 stars. Each star is 2m meters in diameter and comprised of the latest generation of LED fittings. Controls enabled the light levels from the stars to be individually tailored to various precincts to create the perfect atmosphere, not overpowered and reducing energy use.

Suspended upon a network of 6mm catenary wires, with 4mm droppers, the support structure was efficient and minimal. The strength of Jakob Rope Systems Inox line fittings enable the cables to span the street, locating the stars in space as they shine down the street.
